The news of Anna's passing was, and still is devastating.
Anna did not know a stranger. She accepted and loved everyone unconditionally. She had such a big heart and warm presence, people were naturally drawn to her.
As many of you know, Anna lived with a demon.
She fought year after year with addiction - struggling to show it who was boss.
Anna had all the love and support in the world... but, addiction still won.
Unfortunately, this is not a rare occurrence. The CDC reported that on average, 130 Americans die from an opioid overdose every day. That's almost 50,000 people a year.
But, opioid addiction doesn't always result in a life lost. There are things that we can do to help.
In lieu of flowers or gifts - Anna's mom, Karin, has asked that everyone please donate to a cause that fights addiction.
So we decided to raise funds and awareness for Shatterproof, a national nonprofit organization that is dedicated to reducing the devastation the disease of addiction causes families and loved ones.
I called this fundraiser 'Anna's Impact', because Anna's story should not end and her impact should everlasting. We should channel the love we have for her and take steps to save lives right now.
Shatterproof is a great organization that is changing the way people look at addiction.
They're saving lives by helping pass laws that prevent more of our loved ones from becoming addicted to prescription opioids and supporting first responders who can rescue those who overdose.
Your support helps expand their efforts to support prevention, treatment, rescue and recovery of addiction.
Please support Anna's fundraiser by making a donation to Shatterproof. Together, we are stronger than addiction. We can beat this.
