Last year, I entered into a recovery program for my addiction to alcohol. I knew I had a serious problem...and I was scared. But I was about to learn that I could never touch another drink for the rest of my life, and that flat-out terrified me.
It was a task that seemed so overwhelmingly unattainable. I didn't think it was impossible, I knew it was.
My last drink was on May 24th, 2018.
I work very hard, but I am pretty far down on the list of things responsible for getting my life back. If not for my mom and dad caring for me more than I could care for myself, this whole process would never have started.
The time I spent in treatment at Positive Sobriety Institute wasn't simply about removing alcohol from the equation. It was about finding the pain that alcohol was masking and confronting it. I truly believe that everyone, not just addicts, would benefit from a similar experience.
Now, onto my new "addiction."
There hasn't been a more important part of my recovery than fitness. Working out has become my new drug of choice, and there simply isn't anything that can replace it's efficacy for me. Lifting, running, swimming, boxing...if it can help me avoid sitting down for 90 minutes, I'm in.
This year I will be participating in a number of races and events leading up to my first marathon, the Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon on October 6th. The goal is to raise a total of $5000.00 for Shatterproof. Your donations will help get treatment for those in addiction who cannot afford it or don't have access to it.
I will be doing a separate mini-fundraiser for each event I participate in and will match $10.00 for every $100.00 donated until the $5000.00 goal is hit.
If you can't donate, please feel free to join in the races with me!
