5 Ways to Harness the Power of Email

Spread the word about your campaign or boost your existing outreach.

As a Shatterproof fundraiser, we know you’re committed to helping us fulfill our mission. The 5 email tips listed below will kick-start your fundraising, spread the word about your campaign, and boost your existing outreach.

1. Make it personal

Why are you launching a Shatterproof fundraiser or joining an event? Give your readers 1-2 sentences straight from the heart. Example: “I’m starting my own fundraiser to recognize my son Tyler, who’s in addiction recovery. He’s a beautiful, passionate, good-hearted young man, and I know your support will mean the world to him…”

2. Use a self-donation as a challenge

How can you ask others to do what you haven't done yourself? Demonstrate your commitment to your own fundraiser and make a self-donation. Saying “I donated $35 to start my campaign because I believe together, we will end addiction. Will you match me?” shows you not only talk the talk, but walk the walk.

3. Be prompt and personal in thanking donors

While our system automatically sends an acknowledgment after someone donates, it’s best to take a minute to send a short, personalized email. Little touches like this make a big difference.

4. Don’t be afraid to send regular updates and requests

If you’re participating in a fundraising event such as the Shatterproof Rise Up Against Addiction 5K Run/Walk, send out one or two emails a month leading up to the event. This will help keep donors engaged and serve as a reminder for those who’ve yet to give. Include language stating, “If you no longer wish to receive these emails, just let me know and I’ll remove you from the list.” Other successful fundraisers have told us that folks rarely opt out.

5. Thank everyone

Once your fundraiser is complete, send a blanket thank you to everyone you initially emailed. Include both donors and non-donors alike. Briefly summarize how much fun you had and thank everyone again for being a part of your efforts.

Whether you raise $25,000 or $250, every donation brings us closer to ending the devastation of addiction in America—and gives hope to our loved-ones impacted by this disease. We are so grateful for your support!
